The Rev. Tom Furrer, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church in the Tariffville section of Simsbury, has recently published a new book entitled: Living Word of the Living God: A Beginners Guide To Reading and Understanding the Bible.

“After 25 years in parish ministry, I have noticed a pattern. Most people (adults, teens and children) have favorite Bible stories but do not have a very good understanding of the Bible as a whole. And many people find it very hard to understand and interpret it for our life in the modern world. My purpose in writing the book is to help people understand the Bible as one coherent narrative of two interconnected themes: the human quest for meaning and purpose, and God’s self-revelation to humanity. A secondary purpose of the book is to help people understand the thought-world of the bible which is very different from a modern scientific world-view. This is a book for beginners – not advanced Bible scholars. My hope is that it will help the everyday person understand and love the greatest book ever written.”

All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Trinity’s medical outreach ministry (called Kateri Medical Services) which funds and facilitates basic health care for the rural poor in central Nigeria, West Africa.

Father Furrer has provided us with a true handbook – what the ancients called an Enchiridion – of the Christian faith. In the tradition of the apologists he has anticipated the questions, doubts and confusions which can and do arise in human minds on so many points of doctrine. This is a fine book which will serve well in both parish and private study.

~ Edward F. Duffy Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, CT Adjunct Professor of NT Greek at Hartford Seminary

Canon Furrer has combined his pastoral and academic knowledge into a simple and practical book for the Christian and non-Christian reader in search of knowing what the Bible is all about and its relevance to the twenty-first century. I recommend it for all who desire to understand the Bible in historical, social and ethical contexts.

~ The Rt. Rev. Josiah Idowu-Fearon, PhD Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna, Nigeria

In a clear and straightforward style, Furrer lays out the major biblical themes, inserting commentary and scripture quotations so as never to stray far from the actual text. Each chapter ends with useful questions for reflection. This is a book you can give to someone looking for guidance with confidence that they will find the guidance they need.

~ Rev. Christopher Webber Author of A Year with American Saints (and other books)
